Agnes Qwele Stars in Tanzania’s Title Triumph, Sarah Tino Leads Uganda to 3rd Place Glory

In the 2025 Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament, Tanzania defeated Rwanda by 16 runs in the 1st semi-final to book their spot in the final. Zimbabwe High Performance (HP) XI edged past Uganda by 1 run in a low-scoring edge-of-the-seat thriller in the 2nd semi-final to seal their berth in the final against Tanzania.

All-Rounder Agnes Qwele Leads as Tanzania Secure 3rd Kwibuka T20 Title

Tanzania posted a competitive total of 99/6 in their quota of 20 overs, after their skipper Shufaa Muhamedi won the toss and opted to bat first in the grand finale against Zimbabwe HP XI. Agnes Qwele (30 off 37 balls), Hudaa Omary (28 off 42 balls), and Fatuma Kibasu (14 off 23 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Tanzania. The 54-run partnership for the 5th wicket between Agnes Qwele and Hudaa Omary was the highest of the innings for Tanzania.

Michelle Mavunga (4-0-23-2), skipper Nomvelo Sibanda (4-0-22-1), Loryn Phiri (4-0-13-0), and Christabel Chatonzwa (4-0-14-0) were the star performers with the ball for Zimbabwe HP XI.

Chasing a target of 100, the Zimbabwean HP XI were bundled out for 67, with a couple of balls to spare. As a result, they fell 32 runs short of the target. Nyasha Gwanzura (45* off 54 balls) was the lone warrior with the bat for Zimbabwe, the only shining light in what turned out to be a horrible batting display.

Mwanamvua Ushanga (4-12-4) broke the back of the Zimbabwean batting line-up, while Agnes Qwele (4-1-9-1), Neema Pius (3-0-8-2), and Sophia Jerome (4-0-18-2) played their part with the ball for Tanzania. Mwanamvua Ushanga (4-12-4) was awarded the Player of the Match for her game-changing spell with the ball for her side.

Uganda, led by skipper Janet Mbabazi, were up against Rwanda, led by skipper Marie Bimenyimana, in the 3rd place play-off. Uganda posted a solid total of 107/5 in their quota of 20 overs, after the Rwandan skipper won the toss and inserted them to bat first.

Solid contributions from Immaculate Nakisuuyi (29 off 31 balls), Esther Iloku (23 off 35 balls), Stephani Nampiina (21 off 14 balls), and Prosscovia Alako (16 off 17 balls) chipped in as a collective unit with the bat for Uganda. Henriette Ishimwe (4-0-23-2), skipper Marie Bimenyimana (4-0-27-1), and Rosine Irera (4-0-23-0) were impressive with the ball for Rwanda.

Chasing a target of 108, Rwanda were restricted to 87/7 in their quota of 20 overs. As a result, they fell 20 runs short of the target. The 36-run partnership for the 2nd wicket between Clarisse Uwase (29 off 25 balls) and skipper Marie Bimenyimana (21 off 40 balls) was the highest partnership of the run chase. Alice Ikuzwe (11 off 10 balls) was the only other batter to enter the double digits with the bat for Rwanda.

Sarah Tino (4-0-20-3), skipper Janet Mbabazi (4-0-13-2), Concy Aweko (4-0-16-1), Kevin Amuge (2-0-5-1) were the wicket-takers with the ball for Uganda, while Stephani Nampiina (4-0-17-0) was impressive with the ball in her spell for her side. Sarah Tino was awarded the Player of the Match for her impressive spell (4-0-20-3) with the ball for her side, as Uganda signed off their campaign in the Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament 2025 on a high.
