The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has thrown the spotlight on one of the country’s brightest young prospects, naming 21-year-old Essex all-rounder Grace Scrivens as captain for the England Women A side ahead of a highly anticipated white-ball series against New Zealand A. She led England to runners-up finish in the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup in South Africa in 2023. They ended up on the losing side by 7 wickets against India, led by skipper Shafali Verma in the grand finale. Grace Scrivens was awarded the Player of the Tournament for her 293 runs at an average of 41.85 in seven innings, finishing as the 2nd highest run-scorer of the inaugural edition of the tournament. Besides her exploits with the bat, she had also picked up 9 wickets at an average of 7.11 and an economy of 3.09 in 6 innings.

Grace Scrivens continues her meteoric rise in English cricket with the captaincy for this marquee series. Known for her versatile left-handed batting and wily off-spin, Scrivens is being touted as a future star with both bat and ball. Her leadership reflects both her maturity and the trust she commands among coaches and peers alike.

Jon Lewis, England’s Women’s Performance Batting Coach has his say on the build-up of the squad, “We’ve selected a young and talented group of players, many of whom have gained recognition through their form for their counties in the first half of the season. It’s also good to see a number of players with recent experience of playing for England Women U19s.

New Zealand have brought over a strong A squad with a good amount of international experience, so the challenge will be tough, but I’m looking forward to seeing our players grab this opportunity against strong opposition.”
