Nepal Women Edge Past Hong Kong Amid Rain Disruptions

The 2025 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier progresses with three teams in the Super Three Stage — Thailand, UAE, and Nepal. The tournament witnessed several rain-curtailed and abandoned matches. Group C saw Nepal’s women’s team advance to the Super Three Stage, while Hong Kong’s hopes were dashed due to rain-affected matches.

The tournament, held in Bangkok, featured nine teams in three groups. Nepal, Hong Kong, and Bahrain comprised Group C. Each team was scheduled to play the others twice in a double round-robin format, with the group winner progressing to the Super Three Stage.

The opening match between Nepal and Hong Kong on May 9 was abandoned without a ball bowled due to a wet outfield. Both teams were awarded 1 point each. In the second match on May 12 between Hong Kong and Bahrain, play was disrupted midway due to weather conditions, and the match concluded with no result.

On the other side, Nepal went on to defeat Bahrain in their subsequent matches, securing enough points to top Group C and advance to the Super Three Stage. However, Hong Kong turned their fate around in the third match with a crucial 7-wicket victory against Nepal.

Unfortunately, their last match against Bahrain was again abandoned without a ball bowled, shattering their hopes of qualification. Taking a glance at their T20I records, the experienced Hong Kong women’s team has played 91 matches, winning 50 and losing 38. The Nepal women’s cricket team has also shown consistency, playing 73 matches, winning 43, and losing 29.

The Hong Kong team faced challenges throughout the tournament as most of their scheduled matches were affected by rain, limiting their opportunities to accumulate points. As a result, they were unable to surpass Nepal in the group standings.

This outcome, however, underscores the impact of weather conditions on cricket tournaments. Tough weather conditions can significantly influence team progression, especially in tightly contested groups.
